Tell us a bit about your path to publishing, from idea to submission to published book.

My career actually began with ICL in 1998. Once I had done the work and graduated and was confident in my writing, I signed up for an SCBWI  Membership and continued my pursuit of becoming a children’s picture book author. Along the way, I published many, many magazine articles as a result of my studies with ICL.

How long have you been writing?

Since 1998.

What's your favorite genre to write and why?

Children’s Picture Books

Which courses have you taken?

Writing For Magazines [ Previously named Writing for the Children’s Magazine Market]

Beyond the Basics [ Previously named Advanced Writing for Magazines]

Children’s Institute Magazine Article Workshop

and MORE.

How has taking our courses helped your writing and/or career?

Without a doubt, the courses gave me a solid foundation for my success.

Have any of your class assignments been published?

Several have, but I do not have additional information at this time. One I recall off the top of my head is Children’s Writer.

Do you have a writing tip you'd like to share?

Just keep reading. Just keep reading. And you can substitute reading with learning, writing, revising and critiquing 🙂

If you could travel back in time and give yourself one piece of writing advice, what would it be?

To stay the course. Often I let life sidetrack me from my dreams and pursuits.

What's the most valuable thing you learned from your experience with the Institute of Children's Literature?

The most valuable thing I learned was the complete basics. A strong foundation of studying, reading and writing is paramount before even  focusing on submitting.

Do you think everyone should begin their career as a children's writer with ICL?

YES! It is really important to learn and know the basics (and even beyond the basics) BEFORE you throw yourself out in the world as an aspiring children’s writer. It will truly inform your success once you put yourself out there.
