“It starts with an idea, something special you want to write about. Then write from the heart—and find the 'heart' of what you are writing. Most of all: Write, write, write.”
- VICTORIA SHERROW

“In college I received B.S. and M.S. degrees, then worked in the community mental health field. I had loved to write since my early school years and was in the Honors English program at Ohio State. I took plenty of courses in literature, journalism, education, and communication along with my major. In 1979, I began writing for children and made my first sale to Highlights for Children. I took courses in children’s literature and writing at UCLA and I’ve been writing full time ever since. One great benefit of my career was sharing my books with my children as they grew up. I still love visiting classrooms to talk about books and writing.”

Ms. Sherrow has been teaching at The Institute since 1991. She says, “It’s so rewarding to see people improve their skills, pursue their writing goals, and experience the joy of sharing their creativity with others. It’s a thrill each time I hear the good news that a student has published! The process of learning goes on for me, too, as I improve my skills through reading, writing, and teaching.”
